Ever wonder how people in France manage to stay in such impeccable shape while consuming decadent cheeses, breads, and wines? What about the Swedes, with their athletic, lean bodies despite the good ol’ country food they eat. Or the Chinese and Japanese! All that delectable sushi, noodles, crispy-fried-sweet-and-sour everything?! Harley Pasternak not only answers these questions but explains how you can apply this knowledge to your own diet. This book is a must-have for anyone trying to be smart and informed, not only about what they eat but how they eat it.
Harley Pasternak is the celebrity trainer and nutritionist. One of the most wanted men in Hollywood, stars like Lady Gaga, Halle Berry, Megan Fox, and Robert Pattinson all owe their fantastic bodies to Harley. It could be his amazing workout plans (which I highly recommend, just for the record) but it could also be the fact that he’s traveled around the world and brought back a goldmine of tips and tricks to eat delicious food and still stay healthy.
This book is fittingly divided into five parts. The first part takes a broad look at eating habits, especially those of North America, and determines what makes the world’s fattest people and the world’s healthiest people.
The second part takes us around the world, introducing us to the top ten healthiest countries and providing brief but enlightening insight into their diets and eating habits. Having traveled to a number of the countries he mentions, I could easily think back to all the dishes I remembered and for the ones I had never visited, I felt so much more informed! What a handy way to learn about other countries! I almost wish this part had been longer because it was so enjoyable to read.
The third part is where Harley brings things back to you. He outlines the specifics of his 5-Factor World Diet by outlining ways to shop, techniques to cooking meals in a healthy manner, and helping you understand how to make healthy choices on a daily basis. I think this is particularly helpful to people that are on-the-go and who favour the unhealthy choices because they’re simply easier.
The next part is my favourite; it consists of delicious (and I do mean, delicious) recipes that all have about 5 ingredients and take less than 30 minutes to make! I’ve already tested a couple and have to say, you cannot go wrong with these. Seriously, does Sweet Potato Risotto with Veal Cutlets sound like rabbit food to you? Harley proves that you don’t have to go the lettuce and angry-hunger route to get the body you want and deserve. With world-recipes that cover Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, he’s got you covered. What’s more, once you get the hang of the ingredients and cooking techniques, you can start to make all your favourite dishes by making simple adjustments. It’s important to learn the difference between denying yourself foods (that you will only stuff yourself with later at some point) and being smart about them.
The fifth part is a handy-dandy guide to planning out your menus for weeks! You can just follow the menus listed in the book, or mix and match.
The 5 Factor World Diet is not a book; it’s a tool designed to educate you and equip you with the knowledge to alter and improve your daily habits. I’m a person who hates ‘diets’, but I cannot stop recommending this book to family and friends!
